GUELPH – In the first of what could be several meetings between the teams in the near future, the Hamilton Cardinals beat the Guelph Royals 8-2 Tuesday night at David E. Hastings Stadium.
Hamilton (20-15) clinched third place and will face sixth-place Guelph (16-19) in the first round of playoffs.
Laine Renaud went 2-for-4 with a solo home run – one of three Cardinals' longballs. Jon Dziomba went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI, and Jake Foden added a two-run blast.
Chris Beer had three hits and two runs, and Connor Bowie singled and doubled. Grant Arnold and Justin Gideon each drove in a run.
Chris Lazar (7-3) went seven shutout innings, scattering four hits while striking out five.
Brett Lawson (4-5) took the loss, giving up seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits in 5.1 innings. He walked one and struck out seven.
Offensively, reigning Hitter of the Week Sean Reilly singled and added a solo home run.
Darius Barlas and Matthew Pilarczyk had two hits apiece.
