Cardinals lose rescheduled game to Welland

The Hamilton Cardinals fell 11-5 at the hands of the Welland Jackfish on Tuesday night at Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium.

The Cardinals played a solid game but were unable to cash extra runners at critical times. All nine Cardinals batters got at least one hit tonight.

Hamilton out-hit Welland 13-12 in the contest and both teams made just one error a piece.

Hamilton also only struck out twice as a team in the game, less than any game this year.

The Cardinals pitching staff was able to strikeout six of the eight starters, with 10 K’s in total.

David Ortiz, the newest signing for the Cardinals, went two-for-four with an RBI and a double while playing shortstop.

Welland’s back-catcher, Sam Cawker, hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third to extend the lead.

Cardinals centre-fielder, Justin Gideon, was four-for-five with a run and a double.

Rich Corrente, starting pitcher for Welland, was credited with the win after pitching six innings, giving up five runs on 10 hits.

Cardinals relief pitcher, Julian Russell, pitched three strong innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out five batters.

Sam Turcotte got the loss, pitching four innings, giving up six runs on six hits while striking out four and walking five.

This loss drops Hamilton’s record to (6-14), they still sit in seventh place, ahead of Brantford.

The Cardinals will play the second half of this series on the road in Welland on Thursday, July 7 at 7:30 p.m.
